Foundation and Early Days
Founded in June 2019, Coventry Corsairs RFC holds the distinction of being the 100th inclusive rugby club in the world. The club’s inception was humble, with just five dedicated individuals coming together for the first training session in a public park. Despite the modest beginnings, the passion and enthusiasm of these early members set the tone for the club's future.
Building Momentum
Within weeks of their formation, the Corsairs competed in their first tournament, Touch My Brum. The rapid involvement in competitive play showcased their eagerness to establish a strong presence in the inclusive rugby community. In July 2019, the club moved its training base to Coventrians RFC, marking the beginning of a fruitful and supportive relationship that continues to this day.
The same month, Coventry Corsairs secured their first sponsorship deal with The Yard. This partnership has been crucial, with The Yard remaining a steadfast supporter and main sponsor, aiding the club's growth and development.
Rising Through Challenges
October 2019 saw the Corsairs participating in the Midlands Inclusive Rugby Roadshow, an event that further integrated them into the inclusive rugby network. The club's dedication and hard work paid off in December 2019 when they played their first-ever XV rugby union match and emerged victorious, a significant milestone that solidified their competitive spirit.
The outbreak of COVID-19 posed unprecedented challenges, but the Corsairs adapted by keeping members engaged through online socials and viral video participation. Their resilience ensured that as soon as restrictions were lifted, the team was ready to hit the pitch again.
Competitive Successes and Expanding Horizons
Returning to Touch My Brum in 2021, the Corsairs clinched the Beormer Bowl, a testament to their growth and improved skills. Their entry into the IGR UK League in September 2021 marked another significant step, with the team competing in the league every season since.
In March 2022, the Corsairs participated in the Hadrian Cup with a Touch Rugby team, an event they have attended annually. The club's profile received a boost when former Rugby International James Haskell joined a training session in April 2022, followed by England Rugby Ladies player Jess Breach leading a session in May 2022.
Community Engagement and Recognition
February 2023 brought national recognition as the Corsairs became the poster boys for GreeneKing’s “Proud To Pitch In” campaign. Their players featured on promotional displays and packaging in supermarkets across the country, celebrating their commitment to inclusivity and rugby.
In July 2023, the club organized its first Touch Rugby tournament, Touch Of Cov, which was a resounding success. The 2023/2024 season turned out to be their most successful rugby union season to date, with the team winning over 75% of their matches.
Continued Commitment to Inclusivity and Charity
Coventry Corsairs have also made their mark off the pitch, participating in Birmingham Pride, Warwickshire Pride, and Coventry Pride events every year since 2021. Their charitable efforts include collaborations with Morrisons supermarkets to raise funds for various causes, demonstrating their commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
Looking Forward
Coventry Corsairs RFC's journey from a small group in a park to a thriving, inclusive rugby club is a testament to their dedication, resilience, and the strong bonds they have formed within the rugby and broader communities. With each passing season, the Corsairs continue to embody the spirit of inclusivity and sportsmanship, inspiring others and paving the way for a more inclusive future in rugby.
